Research Overview
PhD
I started my PhD in October 2008, in the School of Computing at the University of the West of Scotland (formerly University of Paisley), and my supervisor is Dr. Daniel Livingstone, who lectures on the Computer Games Technology BSc course. I am scheduled to take about 3 years in total to get the PhD, so I hope to be finished by the end of 2011.
My research is somewhat cross-disciplinary, as it involves a lot of computing, but with a focus on education and 'e-learning'. The main goal of my research is exploring how to integrate two technologies: web-based 'virtual learning environments' (VLEs), and immersive 'multi-user virtual environments' (MUVEs).
The underlying theme is the application of user-centred approaches in achieving that goal, meaning that I have to explore ways of making sure the software that is ultimately produced is useful and usable for learners and teachers.
SLOODLE
Prior to my PhD, I worked full-time as a Research Assistant / Developer on the SLOODLE project. (I am currently continuing in the role on a part-time basis.)
The aim of SLOODLE is very similar to my research, specifically exploring the integration of the Moodle VLE, and the Second Life virtual world. You can read more about these technologies by clicking the "Technologies" link on the left.
