My Faith

I am a Christian, which means I believe in God, I pray, I read the Bible, and I go to church. I don't hold to any particular denomination as a Christian, although I tend towards fairly lively and contemporary churches, with a somewhat conservative theology. I currently attend Christ Church Cottingham.

What about science?

Given my academic inclinations, this seems a pertinent question. A lot of Christians misunderstand, misrepresent, or just plain ignore science. I actually enjoy learning a little about science, insofar as I have the ability to understand it, and I put great stock in the scientific method as a means for gaining knowledge. It is clear that the knowledge pursued and contributed by much of the rich and diverse scientific community has enriched the lives of many.

However, I won't pretend that I can prove God's existence scientifically. I don't believe that's possible.

Why Christianity?

Contrary to some impressions of faith, I didn't decide to be religious and then just pick Christianity off the philosophical shelf. Neither am I simply the product of a 'religious' upbringing, although I admit that was almost certainly a factor.

I am a Christian because I genuinely believe in God as He is revealed in Christian scripture, and because the truths I perceive therein strike a chord in me that I cannot shake or escape. In the same way that a person may feel their personality or sexuality is inherent to their identity, so I believe my faith in God is inherent to mine.

"For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith."

Romans 12:3 [NKJV]
